Change process for the Kyrgyzstan education system

Client:  European Training Foundation (ETF)

Canast client:  CBE Consultants

Application:  Strategy session

Number of participants:  15

Duration:  One day

Set-up:  Meeting room in a U form

Location:  European Training Foundation in Milan

The challenge The education system in Kyrgyzstan underwent a change process, in which a number of improvements had to be made. However, all the different stakeholders had their own priorities as far as these improvements were concerned. The challenge was to put together a list of all these priorities.

Why was Spilter chosen for this task? The many points for improvement were all of equal importance in the eyes of the stakeholders. The stakeholders were in many different types of jobs, which meant it was difficult to hold a meeting where everyone was considered equal. However, this group had to make some choices from possible improvements that could have an effect and be implemented  in the education system in the short term.  Spilter was able to evaluate the opinions of all stakeholders quickly and accurately.

The project By using Spilter, a one day session could be held in Milan where all participants were asked to provide their opinions about all the improvements they wanted to implement. Canast hosted this session together with CBE Consultants. The Russian responses were translated live into English so that they could proceed quickly to a next step.  The group made choices based on different types of analyses that showed the issue from many different angles.

What did they achieve with Spilter? Thanks to Spilter, they made a clear choice of subjects that they will pursue in more detail in the short-term in order to achieve the best possible results.

The National Franchise Congress

Client:  X

Application:  Online survey and brainstorming session

Number of people invited to participate in survey:  1,000

Duration of survey:  Four weeks

Number of participants in Spilter session:  180

Duration of Spilter session:  One day

Set-up:  Separate tables with one PC per table

Location:   De Galgenwaard stadium in Utrecht

The challenge

The client organises the National Franchise Congress in the Netherlands each year, creating a knowledge platform for all franchisers.  Prior to the congress, the client wanted to know what the franchisers have on their minds, so that these issues could be discussed during the congress in an innovative and positive manner.

Why did they choose Spilter?

The client wanted to conduct a survey in advance and believed it was important that the congress participants have input in the programme.  He also wanted a report of all ideas. These requests could be achieved easily with Spilter.

The project

A large online survey was conducted with Spilter among approximately one thousand franchisers prior to the congress. They were asked questions about financial information, sales channels, benchmarks and cooperation.  The participants could also specify which subjects they would like to see discussed during the congress. During the congress, a brainstorming session was held among one hundred twenty participants, spread over tables of ten people each, all at the same time.  The ideas that were generated at each table were entered into Spilter. In this way, all participants could see the responses from the other tables, both on their laptop as well as on the big screen. They could also log in individually during the break to give their own opinion about the ideas that had been generated.

What did they achieve with Spilter?

By conducting an online survey in advance, the National Franchise Congress was a success with very satisfied participants who saw that the problems and ideas each of them had brought to the table had been discussed. The participants received a report during the congress that contained all the ideas and the results of the online survey.

Innovatiemanagement

Friesland Campina

Client:  Friesland Campina

In collaboration with:  Whitetree

Application:  Brainstorming and innovation session

Number of participants:  25

Duration:  One day

The challenge

Friesland Campina wanted to brainstorm over a certain product in order to find out whether they could come up with some new innovations for it.  They also wanted to know whether they could create new products based on the existing ones or whether there was a better way to improve the production of these products. The company not only wanted to brainstorm internally, but externally as well.

Why did they choose Spilter?

The principle of a Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT) session is that you develop something new based on an existing product. This results in a faster process, with a shorter list of more useful ideas, which differs from techniques that purely serve to stimulate creativity. A lot of brainstorming takes place in a SIT session. The advantage of Spilter as opposed to an analogue brainstorming session, is that different perspectives can be reviewed at the same time without that having any adverse effect on depth. Furthermore, all information is available right away in digital format, whereby the results can be processed much more quickly.  Therefore, a SIT session with Spilter was the perfect tool for this purpose.

The project

Whitetree employed Spilter for this project. Four angles from the SIT technology were applied: Subtraction and Multiplication, Breaking Symmetry, Attribute Dependency and Task Unification in the production process. The participants looked at the product from these angles and brainstormed solutions.

What did they achieve with Spilter?

In one day, twenty five internal and external people very actively brainstormed about innovations for the product. By the end of the day, they had even had sketches made of four of the innovations by a strip cartoonist, who converted the words into images.  This also made the session much more lively.

Strategy development

Client: X

In cooperation with: ccZorgadviseurs

Application: Two surveys and a strategy session

Number of people invited to participate in the survey: 100 and 3,600

Duration of survey: Two times two weeks

Number of participants in Spilter session: 20

Duration of Spilter session:  One day

The challenge

A Dutch healthcare institution wanted to determine a strategy for the coming five years.  Due to the changing landscape in healthcare, a number of mergers and the impact these changes have on the organisation, they wanted to think about their future course together with all the employees.

Why did they choose Spilter?

The client thought it was important to know the opinion of all employees and stakeholders inside and outside the organisation. The new strategy had to also have wide support. Furthermore, the organisation wanted to record each step of the decision making process about the new strategy. Without Spilter this would have been a very time consuming and costly affair.

The project

First of all, a small core team was established to support the whole process. Afterwards, a Spilter survey was conducted among the families and client councils, and the results were discussed.  These results were also partially included in a survey among all 3,600 employees. The results were also discussed by the core team and served as preparation for a Spilter session with the staff, management and the Board of Governors. Choices for possible strategic options were presented during these sessions. Discussions were held based on the voting results, which resulted in the strategic choices that have to be made.

What did they achieve with Spilter?

Everyone in the organisation had the opportunity to give their input into the new strategy for the organisation.  During the Spilter session, the opinions of the employees, the staff, senior management and the Board of Governors led to a clear strategy that could count on wide support throughout the entire organisation.

Leaseplan Corporation International Conference

Client:  Leaseplan Corporation

Application:  Online survey and strategy session

Number of participants:  40

Duration:  Two weeks (survey), one day (strategy session)

Set-up:  Different set-ups

Location:  Château Marquette in Heemskerk

The challenge

Once a year, all Human Resource directors from Leaseplan come together from all over the world for an HR conference.  This year, the Dutch office hosted the affair and the conference was held in Heemskerk. They wanted to hold a brainstorming session with all the directors from various different angles on three topics:  Training and Development, Recruitment and Selection and Performance Management.

Why was Spilter chosen?

Leaseplan wanted to assess the opinions of the participants prior to the start of the conference, so that those topics could be discussed during the conference.  It was important that all participants in this conference had equal input. The experience at previous conferences was that people from “big” countries, countries where Leaseplan has a lot of cars in use, were the ones who had the biggest voice. They wanted to prevent this from happening this time. Furthermore, digital reporting was important. For these reasons a number of different Spilter techniques were used for this conference, which led to perfect results.

The project

A lot of different techniques were used for this project. An online survey was conducted using Spilter prior to the conference. During the conference, presentations were  given, people used flipcharts. Spilter was employed in multiple cases and they used the so-called C boards. All tools were used where they would produce the best results.  The whole process was in English, including all communications with Spilter.

What did they achieve with Spilter?

Since they had conducted a survey prior to the conference, the organisers already knew a lot about the opinions from the survey and were able to go into further detail during the conference.  They also did not differentiate between the size of the participating countries. And, before everyone flew home the next day, the reports were ready and they could take them with them and get straight to work.
